Calgary’s Best Ice Cream Shops
I scream, you scream, we all scream for delicious, yummy ice cream! Calgary is home to some delicious ice cream shops and with the weather warming up, it’s the perfect way to beat the heat and enjoy a tasty treat.
My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe
These guys just take the words out of my mouth as it is definitely one of my fave shops to get ice cream. This store keeps its it’s old-school charm with servers in paper hats, a mechanical horse ride, a candy counter and even their old-fashioned neon sign. The line-ups can get long in the summertime but that’s ok since it will take you just as long to decide on a flavor or two from the extra long ice cream counter options they have available. Plus, people are encouraged to play the piano and sing some tunes which is all part of the fun experience at what is many people’s favourite ice cream shoppe. The many benches around the store tend to fill up fast, but the neighboring park and community makes for a nice place to explore and enjoy your ice cream.
Fave flavors: Apple Pie, Brownie Melt, and New York Cherry Cheesecake
Lic’s – Leavitt’s Ice Cream Shop
Lic’s is a smaller ice cream shop but it packs a punch with the flavours they do carry including including sorbets and ice creams. The best part of this store is its location near the Bow River pathway making it a perfect pit stop to pick up a cone and continue your bike ride or walk along the river to enjoy the scenery.
Village Ice Cream
Village Ice Cream has cornered the market for gourmet ice cream and has converted Calgarians by the masses – you can count me as one of their “Villagers”. The store is known for its premium handmade ice cream that features local and organic ingredients. With decadent taste and choice, Village is a great inner-city spot to stop by and pick up one of their delicious waffle cones (sometimes you can see them make the cones by scratch – neat stuff!).
Fave flavors: Salted caramel, Earl Grey tea
Mackays Ice Cream
This shop is a bit of a trek outside of Calgary to neighboring Cochrane, but it’s worth the trek when you’re craving their delicious flavors. Mackays is a family business that has been a local tradition for over 65 years and Calgarians have been going out to visit for just as long. It’s also available at many local grocery stores and restaurants so if you want to stick close to town for your ice cream, you can still make it Mackays.
Fave flavors: Mint chocolate chip, cookie dough
