Must-go to events this fall in Calgary
Summer in Calgary is known as the hip and happening time of year. But with so much amazing stuff going on every weekend, the summer calendar has gotten jam-packed. Does that mean that the fun has to end after Labour Day? Heck no, the falling leaves and cooling temperatures just means even more amazing Calgary events to check out in September and October. Here’s my list of must-go to events this fall:
Sept. 5 & 6: Harvest Fair Weekend
Symons Valley Ranch
10am – 5pm
Barbeques! Corn boils! Face-painting! Take the family out to Symons Valley Ranch to kick off the fall season with their harvest-themed weekend.
Sept. 6: Rocky Horror Picture Show 40th Anniversary Celebration
Globe Cinema
Doors at 10:30 pm. Pre-show at 11:00 pm. Movie at Midnight.
It boggles my mind that Rocky Horror is now 40 years old! To celebrate, CUFF is doing a special event for the cult film during Calgary Pride (also another event to check out!). If you’ve never participated in one of these midnight showings, get your tickets and your costume ready to have a Time Warp-ing good time.
Tickets available on the CUFF website. Event is 18+.
Sept. 10: Movies on the Rise – Outdoor Movie series
St. Patrick’s Island
It’s your last chance to take in the East Village’s last outdoor Blockbuster movie series with a viewing of Jurassic World. It’s pretty cool that the latest dinosaur flick is airing so soon after its release. I’m gonna practice my best Chris Pratt-raptor-zookeeper stance to prepare for this one.
Sept. 12: Prairie Girls Vintage Market
Cochrane Ag Society – 43080, Bow Valley Trail, Cochrane, AB
9am – 4pm
Take a drive outside of Calgary to take part in a day of junking and treasure hunting! If you love antique items, this is the perfect place to find that vintage collectible to add to your collection.
Sept. 12: Circle the Wagons 2015
Pumphouse Park
Imagine a travelling carnival of local food, beer, music, art and performers and that’s what you get with Circle the Wagons! This event is jam-packed with some cool stuff like taking part in a flash mob, playing bubble soccer, and even floating your way down the Bow River to the event.
Sept. 12 & 13: Calgary Mini Maker Faire 2015
Telus Spark
Get innovative and creative with the hands-on activities and workshops available at this two-day event. It’s more than just tech and science so you’ll definitely find something for everyone.
Sept. 16 – 20: Beakerhead
It’s time to nerd out at this arts, science and engineering fest! There are tons of events going on during the Beakerhead festival, but I recommend Beakernight, a free event taking place over four blocks on 10th Avenue SW in Sunalta. It’s a great way to get a taste of all things Beakerhead (plus the beer garden is a bonus).
Sept. 17 – 20: Home + Design Show
Get all your home improvement ideas in one place at the annual Home + Design Show this fall. This year’s feature guests are Bryan and Sarah Baeumler from the HGTV hits, Leave it to Bryan and Canada’s Handyman Challenge.
Sept. 26: Etsy Calgary: Made in Canada
Golden Acre Garden Centre
9am – 5pm
If you love Etsy online, you’ll love seeing it in person. Vendors will be showing off their wares and it will be a great chance to support our local creatives.
Oct. 3: Last Outdoor Market at Eau Claire
11am – 5pm
Well, this title is pretty self-explanatory. Head on over to Eau Claire Market to listen to live music, eat from food trucks and check out some local artists.
Oct 3 & 4: Kayben’s Pumpkin Days mini market
Kayben Farms, 314064 32 Stree E, Okotoks, Alberta
Saturdays and Sundays, 10am – 5pm
This is just the first weekend of fun for this family-friendly affair. All the things you can think of in a fall fair will be there: wagon rides, pumpkin painting, crafts and more. Tickets available online.
Oct. 16 & 17: Rocky Mountain Wine & Food Festival
BMO Centre
Food, wine, done! The annual Rocky Mountain Wine & Food Festival makes for a great date night, girls night or any kind of night out. In addition to wine, the show will offer premium spirits, single malt and blended scotches, port, specialty liqueurs, and micro-brewed beers. I also love that this event gives back to the community supporting the Calgary Food Bank, SAIT Culinary Arts, Mealshare and Jumpstart charities.
Rocky Mountain is also giving away an amazing Arrive in Style prize package that includes a shopping spree at Chinook, a hotel stay at Hotel Arts and of course, tickets for the festival as well. But you should also enter my contest too! Double your chances of experiencing the food and wine fun!
Oct. 24 & 25: Alberta Dames Vintage Shindig
BMO Centre
This curated event brings the best of the best in vintage goods. As part of the Calgary Women’s Show, a 6,000 square foot booth will be set up with tons of reworked and vintage goods up for grabs. A good excuse to visit your soap opera crush and check out the old-school goodies.
