5 must-read websites for the modern working girl
As a blogger, I am often asked about what websites I like to read. In an online world with endless choices, I find that I use many resources to find useful tidbits, funny news and just plain ol’ cute baby animals. At this stage in my life as a young professional, I have a mix of career and lifestyle interests that I want to be able to use for both work and home. With that in mind, I do have a selection of websites that I rely on to get the news, tips and information I need to be successful in the workplace, in my relationships and at home. Check out these 5 must-read websites for the working girl:
This financial website for women offers practical and helpful information to help ladies get their personal finances in order! Topics range from everything from banking, mortgages, job-hunting, portfolio-building and more. What I like about this website is that it Canadian-based so they’ll refer to products and services that we deal with in Canada like RRSPs and TFSAs. They also cover world and financial events in a way that makes it more relatable to your everyday life – so you can stay informed and make wise money choices no matter what.
My favourite Hills star has come a long way from the reality TV days of Laguna Beach, picking a boy over Paris and mascara-teared sob fests. Like many celebrities, Lauren Conrad has her own lifestyle site that looks at fashion, food and the like. But like the savvy businesswoman she has become, LaurenConrad.com also features work-related tips and stories. The site’s Ladies Who Laptop series will inspire all digital entrepreneurs out there looking to make it big in the online world.
Ok yes, this is a gossip and entertainment website. But as a pop culture aficionado, I like to stay up-to-date with the latest movies, scandals and Hollywood break-ups just like any other girl. Jezebel does a great job at sharing this news with a little more meaning by providing critiques of media representations of women and gender roles in pop culture. This feminist website isn’t perfect, but starts the conversation for how we think of women and ourselves in the media.
Chatelaine is a well-known Canadian staple that you probably grew up with because your mom subscribed to the paper magazine. Fast forward in this digital age and the online version of Chatelaine still holds up with tons of great resources for healthy recipes, fitness tips, home décor ideas and more. The site also features news and current events happening coast-to-coast keeping itself relevant to the wants and needs of Canadian ladies today.
It’s not always about work, but sometimes for play! For some local flavor, I like to peruse the webpages of Avenue Calgary to find the latest places to go eat or fun things to do over the weekend. If it’s related to Calgary, chances are that Avenue has written something about it in its 20-year-run. Issues like the Top 40 Under 40, Best Neighborhoods and Best Restaurants provide tons of debate and aspirations for Calgarians to consider.

Editor’s note – the original version of this article initially featured Ivanka Trump’s lifestyle website. While much of the content on her website is helpful, I am no longer a fan of the website due to the various political issues surrounding Ivanka Trump and her family.
